What To Do When You Get Locked Out of Your House

July 8, 2016 by kennyslockinc Leave a Comment

locked out of house boston locksmithLocking yourself out of your home can be incredibly frustrating, especially if you don’t have a backup key readily available. Add in inclement weather and you’re probably ready to kick yourself for making such an easily avoidable mistake. But, it’s ok! If you plan ahead, the next time you lock yourself out may not be such a dire situation. Here are a few tips to consider before calling a locksmith:

Use a Buddy System

Got a good friend in the building? A trusted coworker or family member in the area? The buddy key system is a classic way to keep you from being left out in the cold. Trading keys with someone you’re comfortable with (and who would come bail you out when you’re in a jam) is the most basic way to keep a set of keys on the ready.

Check for Open Windows

If you live in a ground level home, take your chances and cross your fingers that you’ve left a window unlocked. You may feel a little like a cat burglar, but it’s better to crawl through a window than be stuck outside all day. Sliding doors are good for this as well. If it’s a little loose, you could shimmy it open. Have a doggy door you can squeeze through? Give that a go!

It’s important to note that if any of these tricks work, we’re glad you’re back in your home, but you have a home security issue! Your next step in this situation is to make your home more secure  because if you can get in, your home will pose no problems for professional burglars.

Call Your Landlord

Living in an apartment building could be advantageous in this predicament. Chances are, your landlord or management staff will have a skeleton key for all the units in the building. They may require you to show your ID before allowing you into your apartment, so hopefully you didn’t lock your wallet in the house too!

Call a Locksmith

If you don’t have a buddy system, can’t break into your own place without damaging anything, and don’t have a property manager you’re going to need to call a locksmith that you can trust. But, don’t fret! This is a great opportunity to do a couple of things.

After losing your keys, that means that they’re out there in the city for anyone to find. In this case, you’ll need to have your home rekeyed to prevent just anyone from walking in unannounced. Also, think about upgrading your home with a keyless entry system using a phone operated lock . Let’s face it, you may be careless with your keys but we’re willing to bet you’ve got your smartphone glued to your person at all times. Installing a phone operated lock could eliminate your need for a traditional key altogether.

Securing Your Home While Away On Vacation

July 1, 2016 by kennyslockinc Leave a Comment

home safety tips for vacationThis time of year everyone from the city is leaving to go somewhere. Going to the Cape, taking family vacations, maybe even checking off a destination on your bucket list all sound like a little slice of heaven. Unfortunately, people looking to get their hands on your valuables are aware of this yearly migration and are keen to take advantage of your absence.

Before you head out the door for your vacation this summer, make sure you’re taking proper precautions to safeguard your home. In addition to the usual security measures that you might take, here are some additional steps to ensure that your home is safe while you’re away.

Lock Up

While it may seem obvious, don’t forget to lock all entrances to your home. Remembering the big places like front and back doors is not the tough part. But, other household entrances you may not be thinking of are actually prime entry points for burglars:

  • Dog doors
  • Garage door and door leading into the home
  • Upstairs windows
  • Side gates

Think about investing in a remote locking system that you can access from your smartphone. Depending on the program you purchase, you can not only lock your home remotely using your phone, but you can also keep track of people’s comings and goings – especially appealing if you’ve hired someone to house or pet sit for you.

Automatic Security Timers

Installing automatic timers is an easy way to keep perps off your property. Setting lamps in the house, outside flood lights and porch lights on timers to turn on nightly makes it more difficult for people to sneak around your property undetected. Also, consider motion detecting light sources around your property. If an unwanted visitor is trolling through your yard, the light will come on like a spotlight putting the person on display, which is exactly what a criminal doesn’t want.

Security System

Although purchasing a security system requires some legwork before committing, if you’ve got enough time before your trip you may want to look into getting one. Most security systems are set up to notify local police departments if your home has been accessed in a way that sets off the alarm. Not to mention, if the system has an audible alarm, it’s sure to scare away someone trying to break in before they’re able to make off with your stuff.

Protect Valuables

If, after all possible precautions have been implemented, someone is still able to make their way into your home, do your best to keep your most valuable items out of reach. This means placing your valuables in a personal safe and not leaving cherished items out in the open.

If you follow some of these general home safety tips you should be able to enjoy your vacation without thinking about what’s happening on the home front.

How to Maintain and Repair Commercial Doors

June 17, 2016 by kennyslockinc Leave a Comment

Commercial doors can be quite the investment and if not properly taken care of, they can become quite the pain in the neck, and wallet. Proactively maintaining your commercial doors will prolong their lifespan and head off potentially larger problems in the future.

Regular Spot Checks

Set up a calendar reminder for yourself to quickly spot check all the doors of your facility. Double check that strikes are in good shape, batteries are still charged, and look for any other signs of wear and tear that could merit a repair like:

  • Chipping paint
  • Disintegrating insulation strips
  • Loose door handles
  • Doors are not slamming shut

Clear Strikes of Debris

The strike is a prime place for employees or customers to shove their gum or straw wrappers. Making sure that there’s nothing blocking the strike on a daily basis will ensure that your doors are securely closing.
Not to mention, if a door is forced shut, the debris inside the strike will place undue pressure on the locking system and could end up compromising its integrity.

Door Closures

The door closure, the hydraulic arm that connects the top of the door frame and the top of the actual door, is what pulls each door closed after you’ve walked through it. Carefully inspect the door closure for any leaks. If you happen to find one, call a locksmith to take a look at the door to keep your business doors safe and secure.

If left unattended you may find that your door is either closing too quickly, slamming, which may damage the components in the door locking mechanism or the door frame itself or that it’s closing much too slowly preventing it from latching properly.

Regularly Change Batteries

We mentioned taking a look at your batteries when you do your scheduled spot checking, but changing your batteries on a fixed schedule will prevent any oversights down the road. Changing them, at the very least, once a year should be sufficient.

When doing your spot checking, check the batteries for any leaking or corrosion. This could potentially damage the inside of the locking mechanism and cause you to purchase a whole new lockset.

Properly maintaining your commercial doors is truly a breeze as long as you don’t let them go for too long without a second look. If you find that you’ve got a problem a little bit too serious for you to handle alone, call a professional locksmith. We can help perform repairs or replace your commercial door parts – get a quote today!

How Do Electric Strike Locks Work?

June 9, 2016 by kennyslockinc Leave a Comment

Securing the entrances to your commercial property doesn’t necessarily mean setting up some high-tech video surveillance system complete and attack dogs. While a high-tech system might be tempting, it’s a lot easier to install the electric strike lock intercomright kind of locks for your business instead.

Equipping your property with high quality doors and commercial locking systems can provide both added security and control over the access points in your commercial building. One particular locking system that many Boston business use is the electric strike lock.

What are Electric Strike Locks?

Electric strike locks are electromechanical door locking mechanisms. These locks enable you to release the locked latch or bolt on a given door from the outside (using a key card, key pad, or other electronic access key). Electricc strike locks also open from the inside by pressing a panic bar or other manual release device.

Electric strike locks works by replacing the standard strike (the metal plate with a hole in it that’s in the door frame) with an energized strike in which one side is cut out and replaced with a hinged piece of metal. When activated, the piece of metal swings like a saloon door and opens the entrance.

Electric strike locks remain locked from the outside at all times. With this type of lock, the door closes behind you and automatically fastens in a locked position.

Commercial Uses of Electric Strike Locks

An electric strike lock should be used on any door in which foot traffic needs to be carefully controlled or monitored. Electric strike locks are perfect for high security commercial businesses like jewelry stores, banks, and treasury buildings.

Since the door remains locked and may only be accessed by electronic key access, you’re able to regulate employee admittance which helps prevent employee theft, secure your building from unwanted visitors, and safeguard personal property and business assets.

If you’re in the business of selling high value product, an electric strike lock would be a viable option for all doors including the main customer entrance. Another benefit of electric strike locks is that intercom systems may be installed. This enables you to screen visitors and allow you to open the door from inside of the building or at a reception desk. Law firms, financial firms, jewelry stores or any kind of high end retailer would be a candidate for this type of commercial lock.

Professional Installation

Electric strike locks aren’t the type of locks that you can or should install on your own. When installing an electric strike lock, choose a licensed professional with experience in installing electric strike systems.

If you’re looking for an electric strike locksmith in Boston, we have experience installing electric strike locks for commercial businesses and high end retail locations in downtown Boston. So, if you operate out of a brick and mortar ocation, don’t rely on traditional lock and key systems. You’ve worked hard to establish your business and it’s up to you to protect it.
